On TV: Glee’s “Original Song”

Glee broke from tradition with the episode “Original Song” as New Directions penned their own songs for the first time. As many Gleeks wondered if the show would be as good with original music, the answer quickly become clear when the episode was filled with fun, catchy songs and moments that I have waited for all season.

New relationships, epic love triangles, and the aftermath of Santana’s admission that she loves Brittany took center stage as the Warblers and New Directions headed to regionals. This episode was made of can’t miss moments for any gleek. But if you didn’t tune in, just read more to get all the details.

  •  “Original Song” started with a bang as Blaine belted out an amazing rendition of Maroon 5’s “Misery.” Kurt became jealous of Blaine’s solos (who could blame him?) and therefore, Blaine begun to rethink their set list for regionals. The result – Kurt got what he always wanted a duet partner (and boyfriend) in Blaine as they sung “Candles” together and Blaine took the mike to sing Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” in front of the judges including Kathy Griffin who played a Tea Party politician. I can’t wait to see what else the Warblers have up their sleeves for the rest of the season!
  • The most talked about moment of the night might have been Kurt’s first real kiss! After Kurt sang an ode to the deceased Dalton Academy mascot, Pavarotti, Blaine revealed how Kurt “moves” him and the pair kissed. It felt like a well-deserved moment for both Kurt and the audience. This couple is sure to be a fan-favorite and it will be exciting to see where Ryan Murphy takes the relationship. Let’s all hope for a family dinner with Blaine, Kurt, Finn, and their parents!
  • Meanwhile back at McKinley High, Finn just could not catch a break. Even after winning the football championship, he was more confused than ever about whether he should be with Quinn or Rachel. In the episode “Silly Love Songs,” Finn admits that he saw fireworks when kissing Quinn, but as he watched Rachel sing at regionals, it was clear he still had feelings for her. My vote will always be for Finchel but it will be interesting to see who Finn chooses as the series continues.
  • Another relationship that will be sure to be explored further as season 2 comes to a close is Santana and Brittany. Santana is still upset that Brittany doesn’t want to be with her. Will these two friends reconcile? The bigger question may be how the rest of the Glee club will react if Santana comes out of the closet to them.
  •  Smartly, Ryan Murphy saved the best original songs for the competition. Rachel found song writing gold after Quinn tells her that she will never get it right. She kicked off regionals with her own song, “Get It Right” and then was joined by the club singing “Loser Like Me.” Leading up to the competition, we heard catchy songs like Mercedes’ “Hell to the No” and Puck’s “Big Ass Heart.” I agree with Mr. Schuester though, they probably could have skipped “Trouty Mouth,” Santana ode to Sam’s lips.
  • In a not so shocking moment, New Directions won regionals. Get ready for nationals in New York City! But in one of the sweetest moments of the episode, Blaine declared that just maybe his new relationship with Kurt is more important than any other prize.

How did you feel about the original music from New Directions? Are you excited to see what happens with the relationship between Kurt and Blaine? Let me know what you think about the episode “Original Song” and all things Glee below.
