At the Movies: Monte Carlo

Pack your bags and get your passport ready for a girls’ trip to Monte Carlo! Much like a Disney fairytale, all it takes is a case of mistaken identity to turn a no frills budget-friendly trip into a vacation fit for a princess in the teen adventure, Monte Carlo.

Selena Gomez plays Grace, a girl from Texas who saved every penny from her diner job, to take a trip to Europe after high school graduation. Joining her on the journey is her friend and fellow waitress, Emma (Katie Cassidy) and her stepsister, Meg (Leighton Meester). With petty fights and run-down motel rooms, the trip appears to be falling apart quickly until Grace is mistaken for Cordelia, a British socialite, who Gomez also portrays. Taking on her new identity, the girls are welcomed into a world filled with opulent hotel suites, designer gowns, and extravagant parties.

The film is clearly designed to be Gomez’s first step away from her roots on Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place.” The film, however, remains squarely in Gomez’s wheelhouse. She is charming in the role of Grace and shows potential, minus the hooky British accent, as Cordelia. But, she will need to climb many more steps to pull away from her Disney princess image. In fact, at moments, Gomez’s role is reminiscent of her previous part as Carter in the 2009 Disney Channel movie, Princess Protection Program, which she filmed with fellow Disney starlet Demi Lovato.

Regardless of her acting ability, Gomez’s star wattage is clear. Before the first frame of film, young girls filled the theater with screams as an advertisement for Gomez’s clothing line, Dream Out Loud, appeared on screen. With the clothing line, a budding music career, and a famous boyfriend, Justin Bieber, Gomez is proving that she is becoming a mini mogul at the age of 19.

Starring along aside Gomez, Katie Cassidy and Leighton Meester play the perfect set of ying and yang characters. Cassidy is believable as a carefree girl experiencing the world for the first-time and Meester plays the controlling older sister who needs to be reminded how to have fun again. Cory Monteith from “Glee” also joins in on the fun as Meg’s boyfriend.

The film is overwhelming sweet but predictable which may be appropriate given that the theater was filled with young girls. Monte Carlo may not be the most thought-provoking film but it does allow audiences to escape with Grace and her friends on their cookie-cutter adventure.

Adults that make their way into the theater will be sure to appreciate the film’s backdrop. Filmed in Monte Carlo, Paris, and Hungry, the girls are surrounded by some of the most beautiful places in the world. In fact, it seems rather pointless to film scenes in hotel room and lobbies when right outside, there is a world that was meant to be captured on film.

Monte Carlo is like taking a trip to the county fair. Even with all the same rides each time, it’s still a fun day. You just may wish that there is a new coaster to ride before hitting the exit.
